Fight Allergy the Herbal way

I first started getting interested in herbal remedies when my daughter was young and had asthma. I started giving her Chamomile tea with honey and warm water.

(In my native Nigeria, asthma is very uncommon!)

So you too may want to consider also using herbal allergy relief products along with an allergy relief air purifier to get the best relief from your allergy symptoms while avoiding man-made medications.

Chamomile makes a great herbal tea to help with asthma.

This is true for all types of allergies from pollen to food. If you are dependent on medications to treat your allergies, honey and lemon juice can help you stop using them and you will still feel better.

A lot of people who have asthma have found that a natural allergy relief product like honey and lemon juice is a big help to them. Allergies and asthma often go hand in hand. Honey in warm water can reduce swelling in the throat areas which will help relief the asthma symptoms.

Water, Water, Everywhere – How Much of You is Water?

Can you imagine life without water? Of course not, because water is necessary to carry on life. Water is the body’s most important liquid and is vital for body system to function and stay alive. Although people can live several weeks without food, they can live only few days without water.

Water has many jobs in the body.
Water serves as a transportation system for nutrient, gases, and wastes in and out of the body.
Water makes possible the removal of waste through the kidneys, bowel, skin and lungs.
Water controls the body temperature through loss of water from the skin.

Water is gained and lost from the body every day. For the body to maintain normal function, the drinking and the removal of fluid should remain somewhat equal. We gain water through drinking fluids and eating foods.

Water in the body varies depending on age, gender, and body build.
Lean body muscle mass is rich in water, while a fat body has a lower percentage of water content. Because of this, someone who is overweight has lower percentage of water in general compared with someone who’s lean and muscular. Similarly, women usually have a lower percentage of total body water than men due to a woman’s higher percentage of body fat. Older adult tend to have a lower concentration of water on the whole, due to age- related disease in muscle mass.
On the other hand, children tend to have a higher percentage of water weight – as much as 80% in new born.

It is vital that the level of hydration in the body is maintained.

So, How much?

For example, someone weighing 150 pounds should drink 75 ounces of water a day.

It sounds like a lot, but spread throughout the day, it is only a little bit at a time.

Can you drink a half gallon of water a day? Do You? WILL You? (Women’s Health) (Body Chemistry) (Mayo Clinic Health Recoommendations)

helpful measurements chart:

1 cup

1 pint

1 gallon

Natural Remedies For Summer Travelers

Medicinal herbs can help solve summer traveling problems

All cultures have used medicinal herbs for centuries.

There are many infections, some annoying, some life-threatening, that are more common in the summer and can cut into your summer adventured and pleasure. So, if you are from the United States visiting another area of the world on your summer vacation, you will run an increase risk of suffering a stomach illness. These are usually caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses.

The “traveler bugs” at the top of the charts are E Coli, the staphylococci, salmonella, campylobacter and hepatitis A. Warmer weather, which help bacteria to multiply faster, help to contribute to a rise in food poisoning during this summer months.

The horrible E. Coli outbreak just recently in Germany and across Europe is a clear example.

Falling ill undoubtedly ranks very high on the list of things that all travelers fear. Unfortunately, no matter how careful you are, illness is sometimes impossible to avoid and even simple things such as a change in everyday routine can disturb normal health.

Contaminated food is the biggest problem that cut shorts your adventure and pleasure. Drinking water, Ice cream, re-used coconut shells, raw seafood, ice, and food from street vendors are potential risks.

Herbs have been used throughout the centuries by many cultures for health.

Here are a few helpful remedies for some common travelers’ problems.

Motion Sickness:  annoying, yet mostly harmless ailment. Ginger is one of the best remedies for nausea and for the stomach aches. You can buy powdered ginger from any store, or fresh ginger root from better groceries or packaged ginger root (like that at  sushi restaurants)  at Asian grocery stores.   (No, Ginger Ale doesn’t count, except for dehydration!)

Stomach Sickness/Diarrhea: One of the greatest experiences you can have while traveling is trying local foods with new and exotic flavors. Unfortunately, if your stomach is not accustomed to very spicy or rich foods, you can run into trouble. Other dangers include tainted or unrefrigerated food, unclean water or unclean dishes and utensils. When disaster strikes in the form of stomach cramps or diarrhea – ginger again, can come to the rescue: tea, dried ginger or just chewing on a piece of raw ginger can work wonders. To make your own natural “alka-seltzer,” mix together the juice from two lemons with a 1/2 tsp. of baking soda. Keep yourself as hydrated as possible to replace fluids lost in vomiting and diarrhea, by drinking either commercially prepared or homemade rehydration beverages (e.g.: Gatorade). To make your own “sports drink”, simply mix together 2 quarts bottled water, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp. salt and 1/2 cup fruit juice.

Lack of Sleep /Jet-lag: Plan disruption, time changes, unfamiliar beds and overnight travel can all lead to sleep disorders. There are several herbs, leaves and roots that are useful in helping bring on sleep.

Herbal tea made from lavender, chamomile, California poppy or wild lettuce are all highly effective that is used to relieve jetlag.

Remember, these remedies for the common sicknesses that you are likely to suffer while traveling are for first aid only. Food poisoning can be VERY SERIOUS or even LIFE-THREATENING! You MUST seek medical attention if symptoms persist longer than a day, any unusual symptoms such as bleeding, elevated temperature, elevated heart rate, prolonged diarrhea, dizziness or light-headed-ness.

Have *you* ever gotten sick on a vacation?

Eat a Whole Fish rather than the Huge Yellow Capsule

Do you *really * want to swallow this every day?

It is Whole Fish rather than the Huge Yellow Capsule that protects the heart.

It is better to consume the Fatty Dark Fish than to swallow the Huge Yellow Capsule.

The American heart Association tells us fish is good for us, because it is an excellent source for protein, less in saturated fat, loaded with omega-3 fatty acids and above all it helps reduce heart problems.

A Bad Heart cannot not pump blood to and from the body, which means the body is not getting enough oxygen it need to stay active. As a result this will lead to a decrease of your energy level, weakness  and slowness;  you lack strength  to perform activity of daily living. With diminished oxygen levels, your body will constantly demand air all the times. – an element that is free but your body does not have the ability to use it.

A Bad Heart is as a result of many things — high sugar level in your blood—diabetes , oil particles floating on your bloodstream — cholesterol , hardening or weakness of the vessel that carries blood around body– blood pressure and other never-ending problems.

When these problems have high numbers above what they are supposed to be and remain high all the times, your heart will start to fail you.

Only you can stop your heart from weakening and help it to do the job of pumping blood around your body, providing enough oxygen that your body needs to stay active.

Eating fish will help reduce heart failure. And I mean eating the whole, real fish, not  the taking fish supplement, some  serum from fish or fish oil from fish . You got the point. Omega-3 Fatty Acids found in salmon, mackerel and other dark fatty fish will benefit you more than the synthetic man-made capsule found over the counter.

If you choice is the taking of omega-3 fatty acid capsule, say more than three per day, always seek your doctor’s advice —  because too many capsules can cause stomach bleeding!

You can choose to eat as much fish as you want but stay away from fish that contain high levels of mercury: farm raised, very big fishes and predatory fish.

I know some people hate the smell of fish, no matter how it has been prepared or cooked, but remember that the goal is the eating of fish will help you avoid heart decease and keep heart failure at bay. It is the whole fish, rather than the Omega-3 Fatty Acid capsule that provides heart protection. Taking a capsule will not give you the same benefits that come from eating whole fish.

Here is a GREAT RECIPE for a whole baked fish

send us YOUR favorite whole fish recipe (Thai Ginger Fish anyone???)

Summer and Food Poisoning

this hilarious photo courtesy of

Summer (yah!) and Food Poisoning (boo!)

We love summer because its ingredients are friends and family, food and fun.

And we hate food poisoning because it brings with it nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, poor appetite, lack of enjoyment and so on.

Your greatest defense against food poisoning and food contamination is proper hand washing. You can make it a safe summer, have fun with friends and family, enjoy cook out, a walk on the beach or mountain climbing – if you take the following  simple steps to ensure food safety.

  • ALWAYS wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after using the bathroom and especially after handling raw meat.
  • Pack raw food and ready-to-eat food in separate coolers or containers.
  • Cook or bake your hamburger / chicken to internal temperature of 160 degrees or above enough to kill harmful bacterial.
  • Chill and keep perishable food 40 degrees or below.  Your leftover food will become unsafe when left at 90 degrees for one hour or so.

These are the same precaustions you should always follow of course when at home, but are things that get neglected or cheated on when we are outdoors or on a picnic.

Remember frequent hand washing is you greatest weapon to fight germs – always, anytime and wherever you are.

Happy summer!

And we hope everyone had a SAFE & FUN Memorial Day!

Next blog will be about summer vacation without OTC medicines.

Go with the Flow!

Make Air Purifier Penny Wise and Pound Foolish.

Air quality is a serious issue and can have significant effects on your health and that of your family. Young children, elderly individuals and those suffering from respiratory illness like asthma are especially at risk to the ill effects linked with poor air quality inside the home. That’s why it’s essential to choose a high-quality HEPA air purifying system to protect your family’s health and allow them to breathe more easily at home. Quality HEPA, High Efficiency Particulate Air ( purifiers are specifically designed to remove pollutants and particles from the air that can cause asthma attacks and allergies; they can make your home more pleasant and comfortable for everyone in your family.

You may spot what looks like an exceptionally low price on a HEPA air purifying system. These cut-rate purifiers may use lower quality parts and take shortcuts .This can create additional expenses for you; frequent breakdowns may actually end up costing you more than a top-of-the-line air purifying system. By spending in a quality system from the start, you can ensure that your family gets the best air quality and highest efficiency from your air purification system. Many cheap air purification systems also use a lower grade of filter that clogs much more quickly and must be replaced; this adds to the overall cost of operation of the system.

There are cheap filtration systems that claim to be better than HEPA systems. Do not be fooled, read the fine print carefully. HEPA systems are the best used in clean rooms and hospital environments including nurseries and operating rooms. HEPA filters are effective in removing small particles, allows more air to be flow and clean in the same amount of time. Inside your home, these translate into a reduce concentration of pollutants and better indoor air quality in less time.

The top-of-the-line HEPA air purifier systems remove pollutants, particles, and other impurities from the air your family breathes every day. Especially for families with small children, filtering out the pollutants that have been bring in in seasonal and dust allergies, asthma attacks, and sinus infections can make a great difference in the level of comfort and the purity of air within your home.

(and no, I’m not selling HEPA filters!!)

In out next post we we’ll talk about allergy relief and herbal solutions….

Oops! Be Careful!

For Management:
Safety is something you learn from the start – Being accident free is doing your part.

Safety in the office is an executive priority. While it is every person’s job to work safely, it cannot be accomplished without the promotion and encouragement of you, the boss. Leading by example is a great way to get your employees working without injury. Many people think since they are in charge, the rules don’t apply to them. When the boss does not follow the rules, his or her employees do not feel the need to follow them either. So consider your employees as a delicate investment; you want to preserve their safety as much as possible.

Workplace and Office Safety

To Employees:
Are you part of the safety TEAM…(Together Employees Accomplish More)

Employee safety in the office can feel time consuming or difficult. But if everyone works together, it is much easier than they would think. One great way to promote safety is by designating top employees as Safety Leaders. Safety Leaders get to be in charge!: checking in on other workers, quizzing them about safety, and making sure office safety procedures are being followed. Leaders can’t do everything – but it is nice to have help.  So if serious problems occur, going to designated leadership is fine and expected.

There is a reason there is an ENTIRE FEDERAL agency about Safety: called OSHA.. lots of good information here
